Our next free online masterclass features pianist Stephen Horne and percussionist Frank Bockius. One of the joys of putting on the San Francisco Silent Festival is bringing together musicians from around the world who inspire one another. Occasionally inspiration leads to collaboration and that’s exactly what happened between these two superb musicians. They joined forces at SFSFF in 2017 with Tod Browning’s Outside the Law, 2018’s presentation of Fragment of an Empire, and 2019’s presentation of The Signal Tower, and have performed together at many other international events. We can’t take credit for their brilliance, but we feel proud to have given them a venue!
Stephen Horne is principally a pianist, although he often incorporates other instruments into his performances, sometimes playing them simultaneously. Based at London’s BFI Southbank, Horne is considered one of the leading silent film accompanists working today and his music has met with acclaim worldwide. His many DVD and CD releases include the recent Silent Sirens—Horne’s compositions inspired by silent film.
Versatile percussionist Frank Bockius specializes in jazz and is versed in medieval, flamenco, and Latin music styles. He has performed for dance and theater companies as well as in his own bands, including the jazz quintet Whisper Hot and the percussion ensemble Timpanicks. He joined Guenter Buchwald’s Silent Movie Music Company twenty years ago and has since performed for silent films at festivals in Kyoto, Pordenone, and Sodankylä, Finland.
