About the Film

Between 1918 and 1952 Charlie Chaplin made his films at his studio in Hollywood at Sunset Boulevard and La Brea Avenue. Films such as The Kid, City Lights, Modern Times, The Great Dictator and Monsieur Verdoux were all made on this site. In September 1952, on his way to the UK for the premiere of Limelight, Chaplin, who remained a British citizen all his life, saw his re-entry permit to the United States rescinded. He subsequently made his home in Switzerland, where he lived until his death in 1977. In this extraordinary film we see Chaplin’s cameraman Rollie Totheroh showing Kathryn Reed, the future Mrs. Robert Altman, around the abandoned Chaplin studio some time in 1953.

About the Restoration

The film was purchased by the Chaplin office in 2017 and restored through a collaboration between the Chaplin Office, Lobster Films, and the San Francisco Silent Film Festival.
