Hollywood’s second crack at filming Victor Hugo’s gothic novel set the stage for the numerous versions to follow. Lon Chaney, who devised his own grotesque makeup, stars as the legendary bell ringer Quasimodo, mocked and tormented by all Paris. Universal Pictures’ painstaking recreation of the 15th-century Île de la Cité, particularly the Notre Dame Cathedral, are on magnificent display.
