Arwen Lawrence and Jorge Liceaga founded Cascada de Flores in San Francisco in 1999 and have been re-imagining Mexican tradition for years. They began by journeying into the hidden corners of Mexico, seeking the real stories of that hugely diverse country. Lawrence fell for Mexican music as a young woman and toured with Grammy-winning Los Camperos de Nati Cano, a mariachi group from Los Angeles, where she honed her skills. Liceaga grew up in Mexico City and was mentored by the legendary Leonardo ‘El León’ Salas who taught Jorge a Yucatan style of play. Cascada de Flores is committed to music and cultural education. They present a bilingual program for children—focused on traditional Latin American folk songs and Mexican traditional music and dance—in schools, libraries and theaters. They have performed in over 1000 schools and libraries reaching more than 500,000 children with their educational program.
